Looking for WIMPs – A Review
نویسنده
چکیده
The existence of dark matter is supported by a range of relatively simple observations and has been known for about half a century. Supersummetry theories offer a framework for introducing candidates that have the observed characteristics of dark matter. The Lightest Supersymmetric Particle (LSP), such as the neutralino, is the best of such candidates. Inferences about the neutralino’s important cosmological role suggest that the particle interacts with ordinary matter in the electro-weak scale. Also, supersymmetric particles are believed to be heavy. Hence, there is an active effort to find these Weakly Interactive Massive Particles, or WIMPs.

Superweakly interacting massive particles.
We investigate a new class of dark matter: superweakly interacting massive particles (super-WIMPs). As with conventional WIMPs, super-WIMPs appear in well motivated particle theories with naturally the correct relic density. In contrast to WIMPs, however, super-WIMPs are impossible to detect in all conventional dark matter searches. We consider the concrete examples of gravitino and graviton co...
متن کاملE–WIMPs 1
Extremely weakly interacting massive particles (E–WIMPs) are intriguing candidates for cold dark matter in the Universe. We review two well motivated E–WIMPs, an axino and a gravitino, and point out their cosmological and phenomenological similarities and differences, the latter of which may allow one to distinguishing them in LHC searches for supersymmetry.
متن کاملDiscrimination between Nuclear Recoils and Electron Recoils by Simultaneous Detection of Phonons and Scintillation Light
We have developed a detector, consisting of a cryogenic calorimeter with a scintillating crystal as absorber, and a second calorimeter for the detection of the scintillation light, both operated at 12 mK. Using a CaWO4 crystal with a mass of 6 g as scintillating absorber, we have achieved a discrimination of nuclear recoils against electron recoils with a suppression factor of 99.7% at energies...
متن کاملDirectional detection of Dark Matter
Direct detection of WIMPs is key to understand the origin and composition of Dark Matter. Among the many experimental techniques available, those providing directional information have the potential of yielding an unambiguous observation of WIMPs even in the presence of insidious backgrounds. A measurement of the distribution of arrival direction of WIMPs can also discriminate between Galactic ...
